What is a Certified Nursing Assistant?

More and more people are looking into programs that train certified nursing
assistants. The up-tick in popularity is due to a few factors, the most obvious of
which is the tight job market. Having a specific, technical skill can give you a leg
up when everyone else is fighting to find the right job. Of course, there are other
reasons that people go back to school, and many people simply choose a career start
as a certified nursing assistant.

So What Will You Do?

Certified nursing assistants perform a wide variety of tasks in a medical setting,
usually at a hospital or nursing home, caring for patients who cannot care for
themselves. Training involves classroom work in medical technology, anatomy,
diseases, and medical record keeping, as well as hands-on clinic time meeting the
needs of patients in the real world.

All kinds of medical professions are satisfying in a number of ways. They are
challenging, rewarding, and require frequent continued education to stay up to date
with technology and methods that change. You may find that you need to deal with
emergency situations, handle medications, and care for patients who are angry, sad,
or disoriented. You will also watch as patients heal and you’ll have the chance to
help patients to get better.

This is the Time

You may not realize it, but right now is a great time to start a medical career.
Certified nursing assistants are in demand now even though much of the job market
is stagnant and highly competitive. Medical careers don’t experience the same kind
of dips in demand as other industries, because no matter what’s happening with the
economy, people still need medical care. In fact, people in medical professions have
a better chance of getting a job then people in most traditional sectors.

To top it all off, the baby boomer generation is starting to need more medical care.
People over the age of 55 are more likely to be diagnosed with a serious medical
condition, have more frequent check-ups and screenings, and need more medical
care overall. And the baby boomers are the biggest generation to age in this history
of the country. The elderly population of the United States is growing rapidly when
compared to the rest of the people in the U.S.

So not only are certified nursing assistants going to be in higher demand, all kinds of
medical professionals will be needed over the next 10 years to meet that increase in
medical care.

Advancement and Future Opportunities

While you may not have dreamed of becoming a certified medical assistant when
you were a kid, these days any foot in the door of medical professions is a huge
advantage. You are likely to be hired in your field, and if you ever want to go on
to nursing school or medical school, you will be a more desirable candidate based
on your experience and education. You will know if you want to go farther in the
medical field and you will have that opportunity if you start off as a certified nursing
assistant.
